Nice specialities: 3 places to eat on the go in Nice
On holiday in Nice, you’ve put down your bags at the West End hotel – a member of 3A Hôtels La Collection – and you’d like to discover the city through its local specialities. Socca, pan-bagnat, pissaladière… there’s no shortage of local culinary traditions to delight your taste buds at any time of day. If you want to take the time to stroll around the city and enjoy your stay in ‘slow life’ mode, there’s nothing like eating on the go and not sitting for long hours in a restaurant. Here are 3 addresses where you can be sure of tasting specialities – to take away or eat in – that respect traditional recipes.
Chez Pipo in the Port of Nice
Located in the Port district of Nice, Chez Pipo is a 100-year-old institution. The establishment was founded in 1933, taking the place of the former Folco ironworks, which left behind a magnificent Biot stone oven. It is in this oven that the indisputable socca is baked! Nowadays, this speciality is best enjoyed as an aperitif, but it was originally a snack – la merenda in Nissart – that was enjoyed by workers in the early 20th century.
All year round, Wednesday to Sunday, 11.30am to 2.30pm and 5.30pm to 10pm.
In Old Nice, at René Socca
It’s a family affair and another Old Nice institution that remains a safe bet and well worth a visit, even if there are sometimes long queues. The setting is authentic and warm. You can eat in or take away all the delicacies on offer: socca, pissaladière, Niçois stuffing, chard pie…
Open daily from 9am to 9pm except Mondays.
At Libération, at the Kiosque Tintin
Pan-bagnat has been king here for over 30 years. You can’t talk about pan-bagnat – a great classic of Nice cuisine – without mentioning the Kiosque Tintin. Situated right in the heart of the Libération district, this snack bar is a favourite haunt of the locals, who come here to pick up a precious snack or enjoy a piece of pissaladière. It used to be a kiosk set up at the foot of the steps of the old Gare du Sud station. You can eat in or take away!
Every day from 6.30am to 3pm except Mondays
Each of these addresses is accessible from the West End hotel – a member of the 3A Hôtels Collection – on foot or by tram. The Port of Nice, the old town and the lively Libération district are all within easy reach.
