Each month, the West End Hotel**** is delighted to put the spotlight on one of its employees through a series of questions, in order to find out more about their job and what drives them in the course of their duties. Today, the hotel is honouring Ryan Rachello, baggage handler at the West End Hotel.

Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Ryan, I’m 19 and I’m from Nice! I’ve been a baggage handler at the West End Hotel for almost 2 years now. My role is to carry luggage and show guests to their rooms. But that’s not all. It’s a multi-faceted job that also involves working at reception, guiding guests and doing concierge work. We currently have a team of 3 baggage handlers and we take turns working different shifts.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most is meeting the customers, who are usually very friendly! I love the affinity you can create with them. It’s very rewarding!

What advice would you give to an employee just starting out?
To do this job, it’s very important to have a good command of English, French, Spanish, Italian and a little Russian too. You always have to be courteous and pleasant with customers, even though some may be less friendly than others. You always have to keep a cool head.

What’s your favourite place in the West End Hotel?
My favourite place in the West End Hotel is the Lobby, because this is where you build friendships with guests. It’s also the room that houses the magnificent piano… and I love the piano! The lobby is a place where people live and meet.

What are your best memories of this establishment?
I have a lot of memories and they are mainly linked to the relationship with the customers. I create bonds… and vice versa, so do the customers.

Finally, what advice would you give customers to make the most of their stay?
To put their suitcases down at the hotel and get the most out of Nice! And to relax too! A must-see in Nice… Old Nice, Place Rossetti and its ice-cream parlours and, of course, Cours Saleya. These are not to be missed!
